## Questions and limits

### What is Domain Rating?

Domain Rating, or DR, scores a domain from 0 to 100 by the links pointing at it: how many sites link to you, and how strong those sites are themselves. Ahrefs invented the metric, and it is the number most people mean when they ask how strong a domain is.

### Is a low DR bad?

No. Every domain starts at 0, and the scale is logarithmic: the first ten points take a few real links, the last ten take thousands. A small indie project with a handful of genuine mentions usually lands in the teens.

Measure yourself against projects your size, not against a brand.

### What does DR not measure?

Traffic, revenue, content quality, and whether Google trusts you. Two sites with the same DR can rank worlds apart. Use it as one signal for which links are worth earning, never as a grade for the site.

### How do I raise my Domain Rating?

Earn links from real sites in your field: a launch that gets written up, a tool people cite, a guest post, a directory that curates instead of listing everyone. One link from a strong, relevant site moves DR more than fifty from weak ones.

Buying links or trading them in bulk is the fast way to a penalty, not to a higher number.

### How fresh is the number?

The result says when it was measured. A repeat lookup inside the cache window shows the same measurement, so a link you earned this morning can take a while to show. The result tells you when it can be checked again.

## Promises

- The core is free: no account, no card, no premium plan, no upgrade nag, no hidden paywall.
- Private lookup activity is never published.
- Analytics is currently off. Private lookup activity is never published or sent to a tracker. No lookup history becomes public inventory.
